In this recent 2-to-1 coaching session with Javad and his friend, we focused on enhancing their run-scoring options square of the wicket by developing horizontal bat shots, particularly the pull and cut. These are key scoring options for any batter looking to dominate short-pitched or wide deliveries, and the boys were eager to master the technique. We began by using a batting tee to isolate and fine-tune the shape and balance required for both shots. This allowed them to build confidence in their swing path, body position, and contact point.
Once the basics were in place, we moved into live ball scenarios and applied the batting timing science mantra. Using cues from Full Track AI, we focused on reacting early to length and understanding the ideal contact zone. The boys learned to generate power with timing, rather than force, which translated to cleaner, more consistent shot-making.
We also discussed the tactical use of the check drive versus a wristy drive. While the wristy drive offers more power and flair, it carries slightly more risk due to timing and bat angle. The check drive, in contrast, allows greater control and placement, particularly useful on slower pitches or when managing risk during a chase.
2-to-1 sessions like this are a great way to improve technically while also saving money. Players benefit from individual feedback and partner-based drills, making the session dynamic and engaging. Javad and his friend left with clearer understanding and more confidence in their shot selection and execution.
